Powdered Yogurt Culture for Gingered Carrots?

This is my first time fermenting ginger carrots. I'm using Sally Fallon Morell's process. I do not want to use excess salt, which is what the process calls for if not using whey. I do not have any whey. Can I use powdered yogurt culture instead - and if so, what amount for her recipe?
