New Scoby!

Postby Renee72 on Sat Mar 05, 2011 3:27 am

I was givin a scoby, and will be making kombucha soon. I'm just curious if there is any good advice out there that I should know before I dive in head first?

Thank you all,
Melaine.

Kombucha is ridiculously easy to make. Use only black or green tea ( I use a mix of 3 black's and 2 green's per 1 gal batch), no Earl Grey (contains bergamot, which kills SCOBYs). Also, SCOBYs like at least 78 degrees in temp. Around 82 is ideal. I use a plug-in heat pad. Keep it out of the light and make sure you cover it with cloth or muslin. That's about it. Keep an eye for mold on the SCOBY. It will look like fuzzy spots or patches and your batch may have a musty scent. Hope this helps!
