Life Cycle of my SCOBY

Just today my sister gave me a new fresh SCOBY and today I started my first batch of Kombucha in a 2 gallon glass jar.
(1) How many times can I repeatedly use the SCOBY? We have been told not more then 3 times..
(2) I have a 1 gallon pickle jar and it's much smaller in diameter then my 2 gallon Kombutcha jar. Can I cut the new fresh SCOBY down to lay flat in my SCOBY motel?

Thank You. Kevin

I don't keep kombucha all the time and I don't have any now. But in the past I reused the SCOBYs for way more than three batches. Like 20+. And in that process you end up with several and thick ones and so forth, so it's sort of hard to even tell where one stops and another starts.

I don't know about cutting one down, but you can just fill the pickle jar with 'booch' from the larger jar and a new SCOBY will form that fits the smaller jar.

Hi. I experimented with my scoby; I cut a quarter of my scoby and I brew it.
To my surprise, it grew to fill up the gap.
After few brews, It looks just like any normal, scoby.
I hope it helps. Corina
