New user... hello!

Postby sroberts209 on Fri Aug 09, 2024 1:32 pm

Hello everyone!
I am a beginner... just starting with some simple cucumber pickles and have (what I think is) a simple question: Do I cover my pickling crock with a clean towel, OR with the ceramic lid that came with the crock? All the tutorials I've watched show a clean towel being used, which I assume is to allow the natural bacteria to enter the crock. But the lid doesn't seem to be necessarily air tight. So would that work as well? ... and would using the lid help to trap more of the odors?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome, Stephen!

You should post in the veggie ferments board to get some eyes on your question, but the short answer is either will work and if the lid fits into a channel, you can fill that with water to create an air-lock.
