Kombucha scoby stopped working...?

Postby ayahyaha on Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:09 am

Hello,

I have been making kombucha for about a year. I recently moved, and had to give away my scobies and get new ones. They new ones looked super healthy and had been used before.

However, now they seem to have stopped working. They look fine -- color, consistency, etc., but the kombucha has been brewing for two months now and it still quite sweet. Some fermentation definitely took place, but it seems to have stalled.

I have tried putting the brew in a warmer place. I am not sure what else to do. Any advice? I have two gorgeous scobies and two big containers of basically tangy sugar tea.

Thanks!

You can put them in distilled white vinegar and distilled water
5% vinegar .
Let it soak for a few days and then try again.
Another way is to put your scoby in the blender !
Yeah the blender sounds crazy but it works

This is why it's important to keep a fresh back up whenever possible.
Once your culture starts turning dark brown it's getting tired.

Never heard of the blender idea - but I like it. I guess it will free up some the trapped live cells in the middle and allow them to reach the sugars/nutrients.

If you don't like the idea of putting in a blender, I think a vigorous stir should get some oxygen in there and start some new activity.

What is the temperature?

Was this batch particularly high in sugar? Were any ingredients out of the norm?
