kefir starter

Postby brista on Thu Jul 30, 2009 12:40 pm

Hi, I would like to locate a kefir starter so I can start making my own. I life in Brooklyn, NY and can pick up if you are local, or I can pay the postage if you are willing to send. I know folks have a lot of extras when they start making this stuff, so I'm hesitant to purchase the starter.

Also, can I use any kind of milk for this, or does it need to be raw milk?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered genuine grains from this woman in Toledo Oh 2 years ago http://www.kefirlady.com/ She was most helpful - I spoke with her on the phone before ordering. I think she runs a cash only business. I highly recommend her grains - they are the real deal and will multiply if treated properly.

She keeps her grains in raw goat's milk - her goats. I have been using them in raw cow's milk and they are great. I actually have enough to share and would imagine that they would ship OK if kept in some raw milk - that's how I got them from her.

They probably would do best in raw milk or ok in pasteurized, whole organic milk
