Do i have to heat /boil the milk before use?

Postby alicemagooey on Thu Aug 07, 2008 2:56 pm

Hello..

i read with interest one of the posts here and i thought i understood that the posting person used fresh, raw milk and added kefir grains to that..
He/She did not mention heating the milk or boiling it beforehand.

I do not have fresh raw milk, unfortunately, but i do have some milk powder, which i believe has been sterilized sufficiently by its very processing.
Could i conceivably heat it to warm and add the kefir grains to that, without bringing the liquid to a boil first.

many thanks
loving the book and experiments i have done so far with ferments.
Have done mostly veggies so far, but want to do some milk products.

I am not sure about powdered milk in making kefir. If raw milk is not available, regular milk will do. There is no need to heat it or boil it. Just cold milk from your fridge is just fine. Hope this helps.
