Starting tempeh from finished tempeh

Postby Reece on Mon Jan 05, 2009 9:52 pm

Hello,
Has anyone successfully started a new batch of tempeh by using a few beans from a finished batch (instead of purchasing starter)?
Thanks,
Reece

My understanding is you will need to allow the "starter" tempeh to go to spore. I don't think you can inoculate a new batch with the mycelium alone.

Cool, thanks for replying. Do you know how to know when it has gone to spore?

In case anyone else is looking for this info, I found the answer in The Book of Tempeh by Shurtleff & Aoyagi. There are a few ways to make your own starter from tempeh.
