Over-fermented sauerkraut?

Postby Galah on Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:56 pm

Hi,
I have some bought (raw, saltless) cabbage sauerkraut that is past it's use-by date and was opened some time ago. I've been getting back into it, but it tastes very vinagery and has stirred up my guts rather a lot for the last few days. It's smells strong but isn't putrid. Okay to eat do you think, or not?
Thanks
Galah

Hello Galah, :)

First, my disclaimer: I'm not an expert on food poisoning and spoiled food. If I was in your shoes, this is the approach I would take...

If the taste is palatable, and it doesn't make you ill from tasting small quantities. Then it may be alright to eat. Your sense of taste, smell, and how your body reacts to it should clue you in.

For some other opinions about this, I found a couple different related threads here.
