airlocks corroded

Postby alise on Sun Dec 06, 2020 4:57 pm

I've been using airlocks many years & never had this happen. During fermentation of sauerkraut the airlocks look as if corroded. I've tried soaking them in vinegar even a light bleach solution but they don't clean. It seems the brine has melted the plastic. Has anyone had this happen & why? I assume it is more acid brine than usual. Thank you for any info.

pix would be helpful. I cannot comment as only time I use an airlock is with cider.

I haven't seen that in my kitchen or read about it that I recall.

How old are the air locks? Maybe they are simply succumbing to the law of entropy? :)
