Raw sugar cane fermentation?

Hi!
I bought some raw sugar canes about 1,5 months ago, but forgot about them. I found them the other day, and when I chew the fibrous canes, the juice that is released has gone almost sour, not at all the pure sugar juice I got when I bought them. Can they have fermented just by themselves?!?
