Antique crock safety

Postby bess17 on Fri Feb 07, 2014 4:39 pm

I recently purchased a 3-gal crock at an antique fair that seems to have been made by the Robinson-Ransbottom company. I am not sure of its age but the company has been around since the early 1900s. It has a dark brown glaze inside. How can I be sure that it's safe to use for fermenting?

If you concern is lead, test it. See http://www.crockandjar.com/testing-your ... -for-lead/

If your concern is hostile microorganisms, I think the only way to be *sure* is to try it. Can you fit it in the oven? (Or do you have a potter friend?) I'd try to heat it up good and hot and soak it that way for a while before bringing it back to cool, quite slowly. Then I'd fill it with cabbage and see what happens.
