Ginger Beer Plant

Postby bekah on Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:07 pm

Has anyone heard of this, know what it is, know how to get one/some, have one/some to share? We make ginger beer regularly, I've just started making water kefir (including ginger water kefir) and I'm now starting milk kefir. I've been reading that water kefir may have its origins in something called "ginger beer plant," sometimes described as a wort, which I believe is what the ginger bug we use to start our ginger beer would be called, but apparently this "plant" is a little more like water kefir grains instead. Any clues?

The way I understood it, was that people called kefir grains the ginger beer plant, because it was often cultured with ginger, producing a ginger beer like drink very easily, and fast. That this "plant" is indeed water cultured kefir grains.
