Waxy Kombucha Mother/Scoby

Postby hannajom on Thu Apr 02, 2015 8:45 am

I've only been brewing kombucha for about six weeks now. My first mother is still rather thin, but produces lovely tea, so I just let her be. My second mother (actually a daughter of the first) is on her maiden brew now. The ferment below her tastes pretty good, just needs a few more days, but rather than being rubbery/Grey/blobby it's an almost uniform, waxy white layer.

Has anyone experienced this?

Well now it's a few days later... The mother thickened up a bit and is now rubbery/normal and not waxy looking/feeling. It is still nice and white!

Great news! I've raised a few SCOBYs, but I'm no kombucha expert, so I was hoping someone who was would chime in. But often enough, things just work out.
