Does this scoby look OK?

Postby WF Newbie on Sat Jun 20, 2015 11:47 am

I'm new to brewing kombucha, and I decided to have a look at the scoby after it has been in the crock for about 3 weeks now. It looks weird - a milky white colour, with what looks like a chicken breast with skin on floating in it! Is it OK, or is it moldy?

I'm not very experienced with kombucha, but I get the idea that weird slimy things happen all the time and we're supposed to assume it's mold when the weird stuff is fuzzy. Does it smell normal?

It smells a little bit how it tastes actually, and that is sharp vinegary apply cider vinegar. With perhaps a bit more than a hint of "mustiness". I double-checked with the supplier, and she described it as "very happy, healthy, beautiful" looking, so I think all is well with it. The drink certainly "packs a punch" when consumed, and I feel good afterwards! hehe.
