I killed my water kefir

I let it go too long without refreshing and it had a lot of milky residue and had stopped bubbling. So I rinsed it, split it into two jars to try different cures. One just got distilled water for a day, thinking the dilution of acid was more important than new sugar. The other got a fresh dose of sugars. I gave both fresh sugar water yesterday, but they have not started bubbling yet. They do look pretty good, clear and clean. But I think I need to get a new batch in.

These were about 5 years old, so I've been pretty happy with them. I had dried some, but I gave them away to a woman who never ended up using them. This time I'm going to make sure I have lots stored away.
